She confidently sent the penalty kick to the far right corner, beating USA goalkeeper AD Franch. This was Canada’s first win over the United States since over 20-years.

Emily Sonnet's goal

Emily Sonnett is one of the most accomplished players in the United States women's soccer league. She was a First-Team All-American twice and the Most Outstanding Defensive player at the 2014 NCAA Championships. In 2015, she was awarded the ACC Defensive player of the year. She was also named ESPNW Soccer Player Of The Year. After graduating from UVA, she entered the NWSL draft. In the semifinals of 2016's NWSL Championship, she scored her first pro goal against Western New York Flash. She eventually earned her first senior-level cap in the U.S.A and was an alternate at Rio Olympics.


Canada's energy

The Canada team was full of energy during the match against the U.S. The match ended tied at the half-time with 1-0 between the two countries. Canada's energy level remained high throughout the match. It continued to be lively as it progressed. The United States had more energy on the bench, but Canada was determined and set the pace.

Emily Sonnet's penalty kick

Emily Sonnet's penalty kick set a new record, breaking a 969-minute old record. She accepted the penalty kick and scored despite wearing a cast to her right arm. This was Sonnett's first international goal. Sonnett scored the goal in 34 minutes. Ashley Sanchez was also on the scoresheet in the 35th minute.

Canada's second half energy

The US Women's National Team (USWNT) showed some attacking energy during the second half of their match against Canada. They began to push forward and had several chances, including an off target shot from Lindsey Horan. Canada's defense stood firm against the US pressure and held their ground. Canada was able to resist the US pressure and push back. Alex Morgan almost scored a goal.

The USWNT reacted with a dark tone to the break, but Canada came out firing. They are putting pressure on Canada's backline and making their defenders scramble. Canada's defense is strong. Kailen Shepherd and Nichelle prince have made some key saves, with the former earning a corner penalty and a kick.
