This was Canada’s first win over the United States since over 20-years.

Emily Sonnet’s goal

Emily Sonnett, a United States woman's soccer player, is one of the best. She was a First-Team All-American two-time and the Most Outstanding Defense Player at 2014 NCAA Championships. In 2015, she was awarded the ACC Defensive player of the year. She was also the ESPNW Soccer Players of the Year. After graduating UVA, she was entered into the NWSL draft. She scored her first pro goal against the Western New York Flash in the semifinals of the 2016 NWSL Championship. She earned her first senior-level cap and was an alternate at Rio Olympics.


Canada's energy

The Canada team displayed a lot of energy in the first half against the U.S. The two teams were tied 1-0 at the half. Canada's energy level was high through the first half, and continued to be vibrant as the match progressed. The United States had more energy on the bench, but Canada was determined and set the pace.

Emily Sonnet's penalty kick

Emily Sonnet's penalty kick set a new record, breaking a 969-minute old record. She took the penalty kick, even though she had a cast on her right hand. This was Sonnett's first international goal. Sonnett scored in the 34th minute. She also scored a goal before halftime, and Ashley Sanchez netted in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Canada's energy consumption in the second quarter

In the US Women's National Team match against Canada, the USWNT showed some attacking energy in the second half. They began to push forward and had several chances, including an off target shot from Lindsey Horan. Canada's defense held firm and stood strong against US pressure. Canada held firm despite the US pressure. Alex Morgan almost scored a goal with a penalty kick.
