Overly ambitious owners, poor investments, aging players have all played a part in the history of American soccer. The NASL was established in 1960 and managed to attract a large number of fans. In the 1970s and 1980s, indoor soccer took control. There were strong fan attendances but no financial success. Although the MISL folded in 1992 it is still part of the American soccer pyramid.
Major League Soccer
Major League Soccer in the USA has a history that is somewhat obscure despite the American League of Professional Football's successes. It was founded in 1996 and consisted of 10 teams. The conference was divided into the Eastern and Western. At first, the sport was overshadowed by the popularity of Football and Basketball in the US, and took several years before it gained widespread popularity. But now it is one of the most popular sports in the country, with over 300 teams competing in the league.
